Identity verification: policies, video calls and in-person checks
Choose when renters verify their ID, review risk flags, and record video-call or in-person checks.
Identity verification is part of the ID verification module. It confirms that a renter is who they say they are, without your team keeping copies of IDs or faces.
1. Choose a policy
In Settings → Renter verification, under *Identity verification*, pick when renters are asked to verify: never, optional, only when a risk rule matches, or always, before move-in. Risk rules flag a renter when the name doesn't match the lease signer, the account is brand new, the monthly rent is at or above an amount you set, or the space is for a vehicle, RV, boat or parking.
2. What renters see
Renters who need a check see a consent screen in their account (under *Verify your account*) that explains what is collected, includes the biometric-privacy notice required in states such as Illinois, Texas and Washington, and states how long the record is kept. Online ID + selfie checks aren't switched on yet, so after consenting the renter is told your office will verify them on a short video call or in person.
3. Record the check
Open Verifications → Identity checks. Renters flagged by your rules are listed with the reason; click Create to start a video-call or in-person check, optionally with a date and time. For each open check you can schedule the video call, then Save result: how you verified (video call, in person or document review), the outcome, and the date the record should be deleted.
- Tick *Renter agreed to the video call* for video checks (required).
- Calls are not recorded unless the renter agrees to recording; tick that box only if they did.
- Don't photograph IDs or faces and don't write down ID numbers: notes should only say which kind of ID was shown.
The renter's record then shows Verified on <date> via <method>. Each completed check counts toward the module's monthly usage.
