Storage guide

Car & vehicle storage

Vehicle storage gives your car, truck, trailer or motorcycle a secure place to wait, for a deployment, a season, a move or just to free up the driveway. There are three main levels: outdoor parking spaces, covered spaces under a roof, and enclosed units with a garage door.

When a vehicle storage space makes sense

The right choice depends on how long you're storing, the climate, and the vehicle's value. Outdoor parking is the most affordable. Enclosed and heated storage protects best against sun, hail, snow and road salt.

Best for

  • Seasonal cars, convertibles and classics
  • Military deployments and long trips
  • Extra vehicles that don't fit at home or that HOA rules restrict
  • Trailers, utility trailers and work trucks
  • Motorcycles over the winter

What to look for

Questions worth asking before you choose a vehicle storage space.

Outdoor, covered or enclosed

Outdoor is cheapest. Covered blocks sun and hail. Enclosed blocks everything and adds the most security.

Space length

Measure bumper to bumper, plus any hitch. Spaces are commonly 10×20 for cars and longer for trucks and trailers.

Security

Look for a gated entry, cameras and lighting. Enclosed units add a locked door.

Power and heat

For long-term storage, ask whether you can use a battery tender, and whether any units are heated.

Tips from the pros

  • Fill the tank and add fuel stabilizer, change the oil, and over-inflate the tires a little for long storage.
  • Use a battery tender if power is available. Otherwise disconnect the battery.
  • Keep registration and insurance current. Most facilities require both.
  • Use a breathable car cover, never plastic, and put a few dryer sheets or rodent deterrent inside.

Car & vehicle storage: common questions

Does my vehicle need to be registered and insured?
Almost always. Facilities typically require current registration, insurance and a running vehicle, and some ask for a copy of each.
What's the difference between covered and enclosed storage?
Covered spaces have a roof but open sides. Enclosed units are walled with a garage door, which protects better and adds security.
Can I store a project car that doesn't run?
Some facilities allow inoperable vehicles in enclosed units. Many require vehicles to run. Ask before you reserve.
